You can't conquer while losing more than you gain. Battles are unrelated to conquering as you don't need to battle to conquer, but you absolutely must win something, be it land or hearts. Are... you crazy? So if I win a spelling bee I've 'conquered' my opponents via my ability to spell complex words? If I go out and conquer a bunch of unoccupied land (occupying it with military force) I've 'won' some great battle? Even with variations of the word is 'conquering' my fear of spiders related to winning against spiders? Or 'conquering' a mountain via climbing it related to 'winning' at all? Heck, I can 'conquer' a nation without use of direct conflict through intimidation and diplomatic manipulation and having few, if any, open conflicts.
