This made sense forty years ago when the genre was first big. And when it grew in Japan. And it made sense for Blade Runner 2049 to reuse it (it's a sequel...) Now I'm just tired of seeing it. The genre has some interesting themes of societal upheaval and changes (even if they've been done a lot) but the aesthetic just feels so stagnant. It doesn't help that its sister aesthetics have been run into the ground on the internet for the past 5-10 years--outrun, synthwave, and vaporwave. I think it could be cool to see it with a twist where it isn't just the same aesthetic played straight. Maybe something with elements of cyberpunk's themes of futuristic . Or at least a new aesthetic, instead of yet another dark city that always seems to exist at night time, with bright yellow and pink and blue neon lights with japanese lettering. --- rip to all the animals killed in wildfires. ...
