This means wherever the air escapes from your mask, there goes the virus. So out the sides, across your cheeks, down your chin, it still escapes, even between the fibers of the mask. And because the virus lingers in the air for something like half an hour, anyone who walks anywhere near where you were is just as at risk of catching it as if you weren't wearing it at all.
