They could have given away his entertainment, sure. Let's be real though this looks like a lazy power assertion.

Either the kid made one hell of a mistake for his first one or there were signs and the parents just wanted to get away and didn't care. Either way, it's a bit much imo and for the former they're missing a chance to actually sit down with him and really talk about the seriousness of the issue.

Like wtf is going to lose it all and actually listen. In fact, every single 14 year old I've known would just learn to be sneakier and never trust their parents if they got into shit.

Again, I'm not saying not to do anything. But taking this much + public shaming isn't going to teach anything but don't get caught. I can't get over the fact he was made to give away his bed. Couches suck to sleep on. Teens tend to need more rest than they tend to get as it is. But nah, let's just take where he sleeps. Sure.

I'm just wondering what led to this situation at this point honestly.
