And at that point the enemy is literally one shield block away from getting in and cutting you down for free. Grabbing the spear with their free hand is also a option if shieldless. This I believe is usually why spearman, say, in the Roman army were calvary. Good luck getting to the spear guy to grab it. Also his buddy behind him has a spear too and he's gonna stick you with it.
