I remember when this came out. The chunk cut out fits better with the previous context earlier in his speech and it fits better when you realize that these people he's speaking to want to become involved in politics.

Remember the message of this isn't "don't be woke" or "don't call people out". The message is that if you're going to be involved in politics and activism, those can't be your only plays. The best activists in the past and right now do their best by setting action to their activism. Having an end goal and having an ideal to strive towards, rather than just being against the other guy.

Also there's a caveat to this, because you shouldn't go too far in your seeking to understand those against you that you end up not getting anything done at all. Obama is a good speaker, but he's not perfect. Just ask him how trying to be bipartisan worked for him.
