IMO there should be a mandatory class you take in your first year of high school (replacing an elective) that teaches you practical things. Including proper waste disposal, including things like what kinds of plastics can be recycled and how. Recycling policies also differ depending on the city, but 99.9% of people aren't aware of how to recycle properly and their city's policies.
