I save the baby and the parents undoubtedly try to sue me to recoup medical costs related to smoke inhalation/damage they've imagined that their child has suffered at my hands. Much as I love animals, they are legally just considered property at the end of the day, so a lawsuit from the owner would be less likely to financially ruin me.

Any time you "help" a human being in a situation like this, be fully prepared for them to turn around and sue you. This isn't even necessarily a malicious act on their part; they're often forced to these drastic measures by the true villain: the insurance companies.
