We evolved together with dogs and have certain base reactions from that co-evolution. Modern society cares quite a bit more for animals than are instincts guide us to, but when someone breaks that line we see it as a signal that something is incredibly wrong with said person. From a modern perspective, however, most humans aim to avoid needless suffering. We kill cows as harmlessly as possible and we avoid seeing the deed because it causes us discomfort.
