I've been grappling with that, jakyl. In a world of abolition and intense prison reform, we shouldn't be so quick to throw someone behind bars and call it a job well done.

But the kinds of people who fraudulently stole millions of dollars from public funds should be punished in a way such that they can never return to a normal life. I don't think that means they should be locked up at even more taxpayer expense, but I don't want them to ever feel comfortable or content again.

I'd say you could seize their assets for public use and that would solve your dilemma. But the reality is that aspect of criminal justice and especially civil asset forfeiture are also corrupt in different ways. So those kind of need fixing if we are going to keep using them.

See also: what to do with killer cops if you also want to abolish prisons, or people who refuse to be held accountable. There's a lot of debate because these are things most societies don't have any tools to deal with.
