Not making excuses or justifying it, but a lot of pharmaceuticals are like that. I work for a different pharma company, the product I work on is about $5000 (average wholesale price) per injection and it's meant to be taken every 8 weeks to regulate asthma.

At my previous job, our product was a little over $10,000 AWP per injection and it's supposed to be taken as needed like an epipen, and you may need 3 injections per allergic reaction.

With insurance, you'd rarely pay anything close to the AWP but you could if your insurance sucks. A lot of manufacturers have copay assistance programs or free drug programs too that you could qualify for, then they get to take a nice big tax break for their charity.
