It was the later romantics that elevated the subject over the object. Fair enough, but naturalist epistemology could lead someone to creating art that presumes that mimesis is possible at all. But I have a hard time conceptualizing how art can be ontological or epistemological tout court, rather than just being separately aesthetic in it's own realm.
