I mean, yeah, the Northeast has a ton of very dense cities and got cases earlier and were too slow to shut down. They have since gotten things under control. Other areas had longer to prepare, and the benefit of new knowledge about how to stop the virus (e.g. that masks appear to be quite helpful), and cases are going up regardless. Things may ultimately not end up as bad in places like AZ, TX, and FL because people are taking things seriously enough that R isn't a ton above 1, so once they realize they've fucked up and implement new measures the remaining couple of weeks of new cases/deaths that are baked in won't be as bad, but there's much less of an excuse.
