Whenever someone makes the perfectly valid argument that allowing the government to have all the big guns results in tyranny the common refrain is always "B-b-b-b-b-but it's not like you and your AR will stand a chance against a military with tanks and missiles LOL!" People who respond to the argument that way are making a straw man and are also not using their critical thinking skills. First, it has nothing to do with winning an actual war against the government, the point is that the government is less likely to do something drastic if they know that the populace will even attempt to fight back. Why? Because a tyrannical government doesn't want all it's infrastructure to be destroyed in the process of taking over.

Also, people should be realistic about what government can actually do with its military. People who are in the military aren't just blind drones who will do anything they're told no matter what. The military would be divided if the government became too tyrannical meaning many of those tanks that the military has will be fighting on the same side as the armed militia. Knowing this, the government will always shy away from rising to tyranny too fast so long as the populace is armed to the point that taking over will be more trouble than it's worth.
