I never played the original. What made it better?

It had a properly sized world to start with. PS2 started out with just one continent (I don't remember if more were added in or after beta? probably after), and still has a pitiful amount to this day.

This is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of an MMO that is about global domination. You have a whole world to conquer, and each base and continent provides significant benefit and a greater sense of accomplishment for capturing and holding then. The structure and flow was so damn perfect, and an experience that no other FPS has. Without this sort of structure, battles in PS2 had nowhere to go (each team has an unconquerable foothold, which is stupid) and thus had no meaning. There was no point to having a "huge" game if there was no structure and flow to back it up.

Combat, despite its flaws, and "economy" were better balanced. Reviving wasn't overpowered as it took time and more resources to do it, having a better risk/reward in PS1.

Steamrolling wasn't possible and faction jumping was HEAVILY restricted. Faction loyalty was much, MUCH more emphasized and PS2 suffers greatly for letting people bandwagon easily.

Better art direction. PS2 screwed up the Vanu, badly. Changed their colour from purple/teal to purple/cyan which is hideous

PS2 optimization is utter poop. Game still runs like ass. PS1 ran really damn well for being an MMOFPS in the mid 2000s

PS2 copying Battlefield and trying to bring PlanetSide things into it was a mistake.
