After watching more of Oshii's work I am convinced that the aberration in his filmography is not Sky Crawlers, but rather Ghost in the Shell, and he is primarily a creator of dull pointless movies that think they are deeper than they really are. That's definitely describes pretty much everything he's worked on since GitS. Up until then most of his stuff was better balanced, but after that it's like nobody could tell him to focus on things other than boring philosophy ideas. I tend to think Jin-Roh's easily better than any of Oshii's post-GitS films largely because he didn't direct it himself, resulting in a movie that's not quite as far up its own ass. --- Congrats to 2020 GotD Guru champ azuarc! ...
