I originally gave Rise of Skywalker some credit for cobbling together the broken vase of milk that was the sequel trilogy, but as a capstone for the trilogy of trilogies it's abysmal.

I never felt like the sequel trilogy was such a jumbled mess beforehand, though I've only seen each movie once. To me The Last Jedi, flawed as it was, set the trilogy in a clear direction and to see this new film completely backpedal was dumb, not even because I liked TLJ or was even on board with it but because it was plain jarring. There was no indication that Palpatine was magically controlling the whole thing before, and I didn't even have a problem with being brought back to life! I mean, this is a science fantasy setting, you can invent any stupid thing to bring him back.

Honestly Palpatine's abrupt return and the film's rushed handling of exposition were the only things I particularly didn't like in Rise of Skywalker, but there wasn't anything major I liked much either. The acting was mostly nice, some of the special effects were cool, I enjoyed the interactions between the main characters, but like I've said before I swear Rise of Skywalker is the most generic Hollywood blockbuster ever made. The whole thing reeks of laziness. I don't even think the execution of the sequel trilogy was bad so much as it was half-hearted.
