The symbol had a longstanding meaning, yes but it was hijacked by white supremacists and other pieces of shit who rely on your exact attitude to carry out their agenda.

Rejecting "outrage culture" stopped being (if it ever was in the first place) a legitimate response to this when a white supremacist flashed the sign after murdering 51 innocent people. It is not inherently or exclusively a racist gesture but that has zero bearing on the reality that it is now one of its meanings.
