(something like that anyway... the locks I'm thinking of actually always unlock from the inside, but I think there's a mode where they stay locked even if you unlock them to enter. but they can also be fully unlocked.) Maybe there is a cultural/country thing going on here? There is no way to affect the internal hatches of a residential front door here from the outside without the key.
