Also, if you don't have any draconian modes active, the fighting is beyond easy and would probably be a part of why you aren't enjoying the combat. Unfortunately they don't let you set it to hard in the middle of a playthrough :/

I don't know, I don't think a hard mode would even make me invested in the game. I honestly wouldn't mind generic gameplay if the story or characters were at least good. The Last of Us plays like ass and The Telltale Walking Dead games are literally point of click games, but the story and characters kept me interested enough to play until the very end. I need something at least to cling onto to finish, otherwise I feel like it's a chore to get through. Sylvando is a lot of fun, but unfortunately I don't think he's enough (and I'm not sure what he can do) to carry the characters and story. The only real fun I really had in the game was the black smith minigame because it was something I don't think any other JRPG has done before (and I was addicted to try to get perfects on all of the crafts). Then the minigame gave you more tools which opened up more options, the only reason I don't spend more time on it is because I have to farm (or buy) parts lol.

He also had no idea it was 80+ hours long. I think he just had no idea what he was getting into, bought it based on hype alone.

Yeah, I went to another forum and asked people to list their favorite current JRPG's and the consistent top 3 was Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5, and Octopath Traveler. I played both Persona 5 and Octopath Traveler to the very end (though Octopath Traveler had a real bitch of an ending boss, talk about a major spike in difficulty) because they both had at least something that kept me interested in the game. Dragon Quest XI is the only game I played so far that I couldn't understand why people liked it, but I guess it does have the old school JRPG nostalgia feel to it, so that does answer my question. Next time I'll ask people why they like the JRPG on their list, which I admit is fully my fault for not asking and just blindly buying.

What? Tales of symphonia is a cliche game even until its ending

I didn't think so. I think it was the first JRPG I played that subverted the "chosen one" trope really well with the twist that helped spiced the story up and made me wanna know what will happen next.
