You said those are idealistic, but that doesn't even address the question. Gay marriage has been made legal, but that doesn't mean it has been accepted with open arms. In my area it's pretty common for people to make offensive jokes about LGBT people then follow it up with "But it's 2020. I guess that's okay now". This shows that people are aware of the changing world, but deep-seated thoughts take time to shift.
