I think it was meant to be an inclusive statement rather than one which is at odds with black empowerment.

Racial homogeneity breeds an inflated sense of self-importance and a distrust for others. When you're around Black, White, Asian, and Latini all the time, people are people and everyone's equal. When it's all White, all Black, all Asian, etc., you wind up with people thinking they're the best and everybody else ain't shit.

Nothing good comes of saying "just us" no matter who "us" is.

That's all he was getting at. Anyone who thinks isolationism is okay can fuck right off and deserves to be surrounded by neighbors of whatever group they're most bigoted toward.

For years I've taken the stance that the real problem with society is that the institution of "race" is holding us back from actual progress but saying that always felt poisonous because way too many people are attached to racial identity to see things that way.

It's like a "treat the symptom, not the cause" situation. Humanity won't actually take the step it really needs to change but is in a constant battle with the kinds of ills that it produces.

"Nah, that's not true...I mean you just made that statement, didn't you?"
