His "Fourteen Points" outlined peace strategies to be implemented upon the conclusion of the Great War, and he championed the League of Nations which is regarded as the precursor to the UN.

It is my belief that he is widely revered largely due to the circumstances of his presidency, as he carried America through the First World War. Similar to FDR during World War II, and Lincoln during the Civil War. All three presidents made choices that were (and still are) controversial, but are largely overlooked and whitewashed by historians because of the paradigm-shifting nature of the conflicts through which they guided the nation.
