From my experience the game absolutely "knows" what you're trying to do and if you mess up at all (like leave a valid space on the other side of your island) it absolutely will not ever start to fill in your rock garden unless those are literally the only 6 (and then 5/4/3/2/1) valid open spots on your island. So the only effect time traveling will have will be to help you identify locations where you've still screwed up quicker (instead of just once per day). tbh I hit a 5-star island with way less stuff on it than I thought I'd need so now I have no idea what to actually do. I honestly wish you could craft like dummy buildings so your island would seem more full. Even with 10 Villager houses + Yours + both shops + Guest Services there's just So. Much. Empty. Space. You could make alt accounts to create more houses no?
