I would say more than 3 per person unless theyre a legitimate non paranoid collector or competitor or something. And even then theyre a little nuts. 1 pistol, 1 shotgun, 1 rifle.

This is admittedly based on personal opinion and experience. But Ive known people who are gun nuts who owned no or just one gun(s), so theres that.
If you are avid hunter you need more than that. Various shotgun gauges and different caliber rifles. You don't want to try and hunt small birds with 12 Gauge or duck with 20 gauge. You can, it's just not optimal. Shooting competitions are also a whole different ballgame. I'm still sitting on actual bagful of guns that I inherited from my dad's aunt when she passed away that I haven't even looked at (likely going to sell most of them because they are competition guns and I don't shoot competitively) because they are at my mom's and she has COPD so i'm staying the fuck away from her till Coronavirus dies down.
Generally for the average person though I agree with you. Though I would go with 4. 1 Semi-automatic Handgun, 1 Revolver, 1 Shotgun, 1 rifle.
