I still use an old copy of Office 2010 that my parents have on CD just to avoid an Office subscription. At least with stuff like Word...it really doesn't matter if it's 10 years old, it's still solid. I think this is something smaller companies do too - at least at my work, it's common practice to save docs to 97-2003 compatibility format if you're gonna send it out.
