The story is obnoxiously linear, gatekeepers at every intersection preventing you from exploring further until you beat the town gym leader. And this is the gen where the difficulty just plummets. Most trainers, including gym leaders, have 1-2 pokemon. Just a lot of silly frustrations. Pokemon games have never been difficult. My 6 year old nephew beat Sword and Shield in 3 days. The designs of the new mons are totally subjective.
