Allen implicitly wanted to keep League out, and that (alongside Dragon's Dogma and probably some other games) was the price we paid. Also, to be fair to CJayC, didn't most/all of the board think that SFF matches would actually be interesting to see circa 2004, because we thought at the time that maybe the fan favorite or the main villain of a series could win over the main character due to the fanbase's preferences? --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do."
