EXEC_Z/.
GUERRANT-OFENZA-SUPRONT-UNNE
Flash Frost

-exec_z kinda sounds like an insert song for a sci-fi anime from the turn of the century. honestly that kinda works with me. maybe a dogfight featuring mechs or something
-I think the initial vibe of flightless is pretty cool-- the sound of sirens give off an isolated feeling, eyes cast in fear at the skies, while the glitch and stutter elements (which kinda remind me of super oriental insomniac) suggest some sort of cyberpunk hellscape. I think the track could have dug out a nice niche in that vein-- atmospheric and tense-- but the nine minutes of music that follow feel like the intention was for something a bit more sprawling and grand? but for its all of its ambitions it rarely feels musically adventurous, the transitions between sections can feel clumsy, and it never really recaptures the sharpness of feeling of that intro. instead of feeling grand, it feels unfocused; instead of adventurous it feels well-worn. that said I kinda like 2:54's brief interlude, and I think 6:37 comes closest to getting back to a genuinely unsettling vibe.

-this feels like one of the fastest-paced tracks in the contest, even though tempo-wise it might not be (not sure). Horita goes pretty all-out here and it's great stuff. pso vol.7 is full of this somewhat celtic-feel forest-y instrumentation which is right in my wheelhouse. cool shifty chords (1:11! 1:34!! etc.) and a few neat switches to 7/8. quality track would listen to again
-dreamy somnom labyrinth has a cool vibe and I enjoy it mostly based on that vibe; the composition underneath feels like it has some shimomura musical tropes that feel a bit tired to me but I guess that means it suits this track HEH

-meaning of birth does that thing (one of the first vgmc tracks I remember thinking this thing about!) I've pointed out as a peeve in the past-- instrumental versions of heavily vocal-centric tracks that simply replace the voice with an instrument and don't really change much of the arrangement to cover for what feels like the gaping hole the lack of vocals leaves behind. not really into it
-flash frost is okay but I remember significantly preferring another track in its path to retirement (scars of fauna apparently which lost by one vote to flash frost in round 1 and then came back this year to take out imbrium DAMN IT FLASH FROST YOU STARTED THIS SEQUENCE OF EVENTS) anyway yeah high energy and I like the guitar section at 0:31 but a bit rote melodically and I feel like I wrote this exact writeup two years ago.
