People would have seen a female lead Ghostbusters movie for the sake of seeing the surviving originals make cameos. But when you throw out the past continuity in favor of a remake, that's when people get defensive. Make the lead character Egon's daughter and tweak the plot so that it's a new team of Ghostbusters. Boom. It's a financial success.
