Maybe the future is the creation of a Commonwealth Federation based in London which local autonomy and a united trade and foreign policy. That'd keep the Brits as major players globally, but economically they'd still be overwhelmingly tied to trade deals with more localized partners and with international powerhouses like the USA, China, Europe, and India.

Would that be enough to salvage their hit from not being in the EU? Maybe, but not definitely, and regardless it would take time to form and hurt them in the immediate future in a big way economically.
