There were debates about banning it while they were writing stuff up. I'd say the mast majority thought it was morally wrong even if they still kept their slaves.

Deep down inside they might have known it was wrong, but they were too racist to admit it.

Free the slaves doesn't have much to do with racism, most of the people who argued for freeing the slaves were still racist.

Abraham Lincoln was still racist even though he didn't like slavery, he wanted to send all the free blacks to Liberia to get them out of the US.
