It's a ritual. People love their rituals and have loved them throughout history.

For the same reason we celebrate sweet 16s, baby showers, marriage, retirement parties, and birthdays in general.

If you really want to question a celebration, why do we celebrate an anniversary of your birth? Is living a year really an accomplishment? How about a 21st birthday celebration? Celebrating being able to drink when you have likely already been doing it for years.

From an anthropologic standpoint, celebrations are a way we connect with other humans. These are shared experiences that remind us we are not so different from each other. It's less about what you are celebrating and more about the people there to experience it with.
