They established in TLJ that projecting yourself through the Force takes a lot of strength (Kylo comments that it's not Rey establishing their bond, it would kill her, and Luke dies doing it) so of course an older, weaker Leia who Maz explicitly says has to use the last of her energy doing what she needs to do would die reaching out to her son one last time to pull him back to the light.
