And still would have ultimately won if not for Luke. The entire battle was a diversion. The alliance to turn off the generator and the Sith to trick the alliance into thinking they have the upper hand then zapping them with the Death Star. It's basically a microcosm of the Winter War between Finland and the USSR in WW2. Having better tech, better trained soldiers, more weaponry and 800 times the man power doesn't mean you can just walk into someone's backyard and steamroll them. --- When the going gets tough, the tough go have a little cry in the corner.
