I think it's important to understand. It's not rational, exactly, but there's a segment of America that feels they get s*** on constantly and no one stands up for them. They're afraid of a future that they don't recognize. They suddenly have easy access to information and have no experience discerning what is true, while also seeing that the world isn't what they thought it is-- that most people aren't like them and most places aren't like where they live. Middle America's been living in a fantasyland for decades, at least. I imagine reality is a big wet bite of existential horror. Trump promises to turn back the clock and build a wall to keep the unfamiliar out, all while dishing out sick burns on the people who have been telling them they're provincial and their jobs shouldn't be aspired to.
