When a part of a persons' audience don't like their messaging, values or actions, they attempt to destroy that person ethos by mischaracterizing their actions to be worse than what they are, and they encourage others to do the same. Some even go for harassment of the individual to pressure them to stop releasing the offensive content and stop their voice. You can see this in the backlash to contrapoints, and where the term started picking up steam.
