Didn't matter who I used or tried to sub in. The computer refused to allow me to play someone there, even if they were there originally.

For example: I could bat 1st as the away team with no problems, but as soon as it was my turn to play defense, it would take someone like Longoria right off the field. Try to put someone in his spot and the game wouldn't let you. You could try and exit out, but it would give you an error message about not having enough players in the field.
