Carter got elected because the republican party had its own little brand of 'berniebros' situation in 1976, while the allegedly "winnable" establishment candidate won the nomination anyway.

Makes sense to an extent. Up until the Reagan presidency, conservatism as a brand was a bit of an "outsider" political trend, somewhat resembling modern garden variety libertarianism, albeit less socially liberal and more hawkish.

To be fair though, Watergate came as an unprecedented shock, and Ford's pardoning of Nixon was an extremely unpopular move.
