It's most likely to protect them from having to pay benefits to drivers because they're not employees and this was to be used as evidence of such.

Which is ironic because the whole point of not making drivers employees is to dodge all the regulations and special licenses that taxi drivers must follow. The moment drivers become employees, they can no longer actually do their job because they're now unlicensed cab drivers. That's the whole reason they advertise themselves as a ride sharing match making service and not a cab company. Like... that's the entire business.
