It could get incredibly bad if you happened to live in one of the bad periods. Like, psychotic spellcasters with no regard for human life could erase you from existence kind of bad. Some of the good guys fighting against the great Evil were an Empire that kept slaves, a desert warrior people who would relentlessly chase you down and murder you if you failed to respect any one of their million weird customs, some typical Game of Thrones (yes, yes, ASOIAF) kingdoms, an order of corrupt religious zealot inquisitors with an army at their command... The only okay place was a backwater farming community that used to be part of a really awesome Empire that was defeated by the Evil prior to the events in the series, so there's not much to do there, but it beats being killed by a demon or certifiably insane spellcaster. --- ~Phoenix Nine~ ~Victory needs no explanation; defeat allows none.~ ...
