The meal was to celebrate the murder of a chief's son. The holiday became popular because Asians and Jews immigrated to the US and white gentile male protestants waxed nostalgic about the good ol' days before immigrants. George Washington (who had slaves) made it a national holiday. We get it. It's bad.
