Banks are sitting on a lot of debt that could go bad and would do so if student loans were like other loans with collateral. We're facing something similar to the 2008 housing crash just cutting out the middle step of people walking away from underwater mortgages sticking the bank with something worthless. So like 2008 nothing will be done until it looks like all the banks will go bust under bad debt, taking insurance companies and investors with them.
