companies don't want to deal with some IT manager that builds all their computers from scratch, they want something modular with replacement parts widely available and strong support from the manufacturer

it may be overpriced, but it's still better than building all your own workstations and warrantying them yourself

I'm saying I'm surprised a computer like that even exists in 2019. I figured even for around $500 you'd still be getting something decent, given that OEMs can get better pricing on components than consumers (so they can sell for less than one might do for building an identical system entirely off the shelf).

Business markup is a different issue but, at least in the past, I never felt like I was getting swindled by their small business segment compared to shopping in their consumer segment (in fact sometimes you could get a system that met your needs for less in the small business catalog).

This is from the same deal page and I think this is actually about right for what you're getting in this package: https://deals.dell.com/en-us/work/productdetail/3cv2

I'll see what I come out to trying to build something along these lines (making some assumptions and...not cheaping out on the PSU because apparently that's a huge hangup).

UPDATE: After tax this system is $1334. A system with the same setup built by hand (including an OS) with the cheapest parts I can find (that aren't trash, using a Corsair 550w PSU and a Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 NVMe drive) and skimping slightly on the wifi (it has a BT 4.0 module instead of a BT 4.2 module so I could get a $10 card) comes in at $1261. Once you're in this price point I think differences sub-$100 start mattering a little less so $1334 isn't a terrible price to pay (and I'm sure I could find $73 worth of parts if I really wanted to make them equal).
