As far as team roles -

Storm: Balance and leadership, making the hard choices to do what's right for the present course even if things look far too bleak

Prestige: The moral compass. She has probably the most and best ties to the group as the best friend of Widget (Kate Pryde), close kinship with her "half-brother" and later adopted son Cable, wild child with a dark past and famous father (and Grey/Howlett chemistry) with Daken, and the hopes for finding a better future despite a superpowerful destiny (Phoenix/Seeds) hanging over their heads with Genesis. She is the core character and the one most books would have a narrator's focus on. She can question decisions and provide emotional and moral viewpoints that lend better gravity to what their team encounters.

Cable: The Commander. He's not always Mr. Military Man, but he's excellent at die hard situations and making sure everyone gets put alive. He can be counted on for the high-risk missions, but there's a tenseness he can't shake if things are going well or better than expected. Where Rachel brings some form of optimism, Cable, despite raising Hope and his future looking ever more a distant possibility, still can't shake some pessimism, a quality that hurts any relationship he has with Genesis but keeps a steady, realistic weight to things that may be tpo good to be true. A healthy amount of paranoia to keep the team guided true.

Danger & Prodigy: The Brains. Danger is a super advanced alien AI who can connect and process information quickly while Prodigy is a super genius retinue of information who can sort through everything and focus on the relevance. Both can work separately and in tandem, often providing different sets of data, logic, and viewpoints to snd from every mission to help deduce the best course of action.

Shatterstar & Daken: The Brawn. They are there to fight when fighting's needed and get out slive doing it. They rarely if ever back down when the going gets tough, and what happens if the tough parts are familiar future faces trying to keep you from doing what's best? I also think between Rachel, Daken, and Shatterstar (with a side of Kate, potentially, and Prodigy), there's some soap opera romantic angles that could lead to much more believably risque flings than most books.

Widget: The Ghost in the Machine. Literally. Widget can teleport the entire team across time and space, often seemingly at random. But with Prestige's psychic and emotional connection to Kate and Danger's technological brilliance and Cable's acumen with time-hopping technology, Widget can be guided with much more precision back-and-forth than ever before. She is also a woman out of time and out of body, able to relate to Danger and Shard better than most.

Genesis: The Cutie. He is the superpowerful and most innocent of the group, the babe with fresh eyes who is predestined to live out his father's life by all who see him, but reaches for a brighter tomorrow. Probably has the most 'kick the puppy' moments, unfortunately.

Shard: The X-Factor. From a hard future, sister of Bishop, photonic hologram entity. She's got ancillary ties to every member and is the glue. With the aid of Prodigy and Danger, she gains form and function once more, possibly even merging with Widget to give both herself and Kate corporeal motor and fighting functionality.
