Like I get it if some old fuck randomly starts chirping about Your generation doesnt know the meaning of hard work or something. In that case its an appropriate retort.

But if they just politely say something you disagree with, try to give you advice about something they have decades of experience in, or ask you to stop doing something when you are acting like an actual douche, then its a pretty rude thing to say.

just like anything else you can say, there are appropriate and inappropriate times to say it. And I hope people who are accusing boomers of being fragile about it arent the same people who misuse it.
