Is this common with many gay people?

Not really, but it has been known to happen.
In general it's fairly safe to say nobody legit gay magically turns straight because of this.

The likelihood of this happening depends mostly on the age group. What is a common phenomena is gay teens and college students in their 20's sexually experimenting in order to get a better grasp on what their orientation really is (they want to be sure they're gay). That includes cases in which their first sexual experiences were attempts at heterosexual intercourse that obviously did not pan out well with their actual sexual attractions.

The older the gay person gets, however, the less believable their account is with the scenario your friend described. It's very untypical for a 25+ gay virgin to "take one for the team just to lose the V-card and a straight friend can have a Hallmark moment ". It just doesn't regularly happen that way. Like 99.9% of gay virgins are too busy trying to nail their dream partners who are ideally going to be homosexual too. It's not an exaggeration to say the idea of straight sex is awkward, repulsive, or even terrifying to many of them (they've never experienced it). So naturally they aim for a gay partner for that first time presuming it would work out best. Some of them will actually turn down an opportunity to lose their virginity with a bisexual partner just because it's not the gay-on-gay ideal they're looking for...

That being said, your friend could be bullshitting altogether just to look edgy and different. Some wannabe scene queens are known for making up controversial stuff like that just to have a weird sex story for chat. Similar to straight guys, gay guys occasionally get shamed for having boring sex lives (or worse, none at all).

The funny thing about telling others to take the high road is how often it's hypocritical advice.
