Its a way to show her family you respect them and their support / approval for your relationship. I went to them while my gf (now wife) was gone. Sat down with them and explained how much I love and respect their daughter, and I want to spend the rest of life making her happy. Showed them the ring and asked for their blessing and permission to ask her to marry. Of course its all just a formality and tradition.
