But what if animals were harmed?

I remember back in the early 90s when we saw disclaimers like this, it was all very droll. I don't know if this was a thing before that, but I like watching older movies and sometimes they do feature animals that die. Were animals harmed in the making of those?

I was watching Charlie Chan yesterday and saw this:

It should start at the right time. He had a carrier pigeon that was poisoned to death. Granted it is not shown super clearly, but I wonder if back then no one cared, and that pigeon who was perfectly fine at the beginning of the movie, was sacrificed by the end to Hollywood.

What think you of this possibility?
