A dog who it is suspected was raped so viciously her intestines were left hanging out of her bottom has found a new home.

For two years Olive's fate hung in the balance after she was picked up while a stray in West London.

The canine had been abandoned after most likely being raped by a human, leaving her with a prolapsed uterus and her intestines hanging out.

To add to the damaged animal's woes, a judge ordered Olive to be put down on the basis she is an illegal pit bull type dog.

Her life was saved by a group of animal campaigners, who rallied around the survivor and pushed for a hearing to determine her fate.

They argued Olive posed no risk to the public and should be exempt from Breed Specific Legislation.

On Tuesday, after years of legal appeals, a judge at Willesden Magistrates Court delivered the news animal lovers across the land had been waiting for - the brave pup was ruled safe.

A new owner has now stepped in to look after Olive as she embarks on the next stage of her life.

They must make sure she is kept on a lead (leash)and wearing a muzzle in public places.

James Parry, dog law specialist and the solicitor who represented the campaigners : "There was never anything said that suggested Olive had misbehaved before she was found as a stray.

I suppose Olive illustrates the futility of this particular piece of legislation better than any other.

"This poor dog was found as a stray and the amount of money spent putting her back together again and only for them to say 'well she doesnt look quite right, shes a pit bull so shes got to be killed'."

Before this week's ruling Alexis Atchison, who helped launch the campaign and travels to court hearings in London from her home in Edinburgh, summarised what Olive meant to her and the people of Great Britain.

The 36-year-old said: "Olive is the nation's dog. She's not just one person's dog. She is loved by so many.

"She's got an army behind her, there are so many people fighting for her."
